“Helping you to re-bloom without the weight and residue of the past.”
Lotus flowers sit in river water. At night, they go into the water, which is dirty, dark and murky. Every morning, the lotus re-blooms without any of the residue from the night before. We’ve all experienced the trials of life and these trials have shaped the way we view ourselves, the world, and others. Meagan S. Howard’s goal is to help clients re-bloom without the weight and residue of the past holding them back.
Howard began her private practice, The Lotus Mind, PLLC in 2019. She graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and the University of Houston– Clear Lake with a master’s degree in Counseling. An empathetic and caring person at heart, Howard has always had a passion for helping others. As a teenager, she noticed how people gravitated towards her to help them through their problems or for much-needed support. The more she learned about psychology, the more Howard’s interest in mental health and her passion towards educating and helping others grew.
“As a therapist, I’ve faced my own challenges that have further propelled my passion for helping others uncover their power and re-bloom without the weight and residue of their past,” Howard says.
Of her many accomplishments and accolades, she is most proud of becoming a full-time entrepreneur before the age of 30, and the work she’s been able to do with her clients to help them unlock the greater versions of themselves.
Howard began her career in 2013 as a caseworker for Adult Protective Services after graduating from PVAMU. While at APS, she began her graduate program at University of Houston— Clear Lake. After leaving APS while still in her program, she began working as a Service Coordinator and later a mentor, where she trained other Service Coordinators at the Harris Center for individuals diagnosed with intellectual disabilities and other related conditions. While there, she interned at a local psychiatric hospital, where she provided individual, group and family therapy to children, adolescents and adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders. Upon graduating, Howard worked part-time at the psychiatric hospital and full-time at the agency providing outpatient therapy. She later began working for another psychiatric hospital. After being at the second hospital for a year, she moved to a third psychiatric hospital, where she provided therapy to geriatric patients.
Howard says being full-time in her private practice is one of her biggest successes, because it has allowed her the opportunity to provide services to the population that she’s most passionate about.
“It’s also allowed me the flexibility to engage in other opportunities that I’m passionate about that I otherwise would not have been able to do,” she says.
Howard prides herself in meeting clients where they are and allowing them to bring their full self to the therapeutic process. Her empathy and life experiences help her to be relatable to the client while assisting them on their mental health journey. She has a passion for educating the client so that they not only begin to heal, but they also have an understanding for how their past experiences have played a role in where they are, understand their symptoms and are able to create a plan they can implement, when needed.
Howard credits her mom for being her biggest supporter. Her siblings, family and close friends have all been major encouragers on her professional journey as well. She is currently the Vice Chair for Melanin Minds Matter, an organization that provides a school-based mental health program to children.
